A LEGACY OF SPEED

Born from the exploits of the Italian Air Force High Speed Unit, this project honors the twenty-three pilots who redefined the limits of aviation.

After Italy’s defeat in the 1927 Schneider Trophy, the most prestigious air speed race in the world, a radical decision was taken: to create a specialized unit devoted exclusively to speed. Under the leadership of Italo Balbo and Lieutenant Colonel Mario Bernasconi, the High Speed School was founded in 1928 and based in Desenzano del Garda, chosen for its calm waters and ideal testing conditions.

Here, speed became a discipline, precision a requirement, and innovation a necessity, culminating in Francesco Agello’s world record of 709.209 km/h in 1934, a record that remains unbroken.

THE NAME

The name VRossa is rooted in a true rite of passage.

To earn the Velocista pilot badge at the Scuola Alta Velocità, a cadet must exceed 500 km/h on a course marked by pylons. The insignia itself is an eagle bearing a red letter V at its center. Speed alone is not enough. The pilot must also execute the legendary “Desenzano” turn, a maneuver of exceptional difficulty that demands absolute precision and composure.

This pen takes its name from that special Speed Badge, a symbol of courage, mastery, and controlled velocity.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT

When designing the VRossa Pen, the intention was never to recreate a miniature fuselage of the Macchi M.C.72. It was not conceived as a scale model, nor as a nostalgic tribute. The goal was to capture the essence of speed and translate it into form.

I drew inspiration from the bold, uncompromising lines of 1930s racing seaplanes, aircraft shaped entirely by performance, where every curve had a purpose and every surface was tightened by velocity. Those machines were not decorative. They were distilled momentum.

EMBODYING VELOCITY

Rather than copying a fast object, I set out to design something that feels inherently fast. Speed here is not a technical specification, but tension: compression, forward thrust contained within a silhouette.

Each line eliminates the unnecessary and preserves only what pushes forward. The surfaces are stretched, and the curves suggest continuation beyond the physical boundary of the object.

The result is a pen that appears to move even while resting on a desk. It does not imitate flight. It suggests it. The VRossa Pen does not represent an aircraft, it embodies velocity in its purest form.

HIGH TECHNOLOGY, HANDCRAFTED SOUL

The object is entirely milled from solid Grade 5 titanium using 5-axis machines with micron-level tolerances. It is then finished by hand, following traditional polishing processes that enhance the natural play of light on metal without altering its geometry.

Neither titanium nor aluminium undergo chemical treatments; every surface is manually finished to preserve authenticity and material integrity.

Enamelled details are handmade by local artisans, while the cap mechanism and riveting techniques are derived from fine watchmaking.

THE CASE

The container combines aeronautical aluminium (Avional T2024) with vegetable-tanned cowhide, entirely hand-stitched.

The design is officially registered and produced in a strictly limited edition of twenty-three pieces, one for each pilot who shaped this extraordinary legacy.
